Why should I plan a cruise?
Every day, more and more people are
discovering the all-inclusive pleasure of a cruise vacation.
More singles, families, couples, honeymooners, second
honeymooners and groups of friends are sailing away on the
vacation of their lives. Last year alone nearly six and a
half million people enjoyed a cruise vacation. When you add
it all up, it's easy to see why.
-
The price of your ticket includes all of
your meals and in-between snacks on-board; plus, an
exciting voyage to some of the most provocative and
culturally-enriching places in the world.
-
You'll
find that a cruise ship is a floating resort with all the
things a fine resort has to offer and more! You'll meet
new friends who share the same tastes and interests as
you.
-
The hassles of an
ordinary vacation are completely eliminated. A cruise is
one convenient package. You don't have to worry about
making dinner or nightclub reservations, running to make
flight connections as you travel from one destination to
another, or packing and unpacking.
-
You can lie back and be
completely pampered. Or, go non-stop. Dine like never
before. Enjoy one great show after another. Let your cares
float away!
It's no wonder that more people are taking
cruise vacations than ever before. And once they get a taste
of cruising, they come back for more, again and again.
What can I expect to eat?
Everything you've heard about cruise ship dining is true.
You'll find a varied selection of entrees (appetizers,
salads, soups, vegetables, and desserts, too) every time you
sit down. And there's virtually no limit on what or how much
you can order. But, just because your cruise ship offers
plenty of delicious food, doesn't mean you'll come home out
of shape. You can choose low-cal, spa, vegetarian or fitness
menu selections that are just as tempting as the regular
menu. Best of all, the one thing you'll never see on a
cruise ship menu is a price. Because all your meals are
included!
Is
cruising an affordable vacation value?
Cruising is the best vacation value! There are cruise
vacations to suit every budget. Your cruise fare includes
all meals, your stateroom, on-board activities and
entertainment, plus transportation from port to port. You'll
know what your vacation will end up costing you before you
go. You'll be amazed!
Typically your
only extra expenses will be drinks, optional shore
excursions, and personal services such as massage or
hairstyling.
Alternate
Air Arrangements
If you are not willing to take the "luck of the draw" in
terms of the air arrangements, you do have an alternative
service the cruise lines offer. You are allowed to request
specifics - such as airlines, routing, etc. There is no
charge to submit our "ideal scenario" and the cruise lines
respond with what they can offer. At that time we are told
about our options and how much it will cost to get them. The
standard deviation fee for a domestic departure is $50 pp
and if applicable, the price difference between the class of
service available to us to book into and the normal
contracted rate. Whatever you want to do, it doesn't cost
anything to "ask" and you then have the final decision as to
if you accept or deny the air deviation offered to us before
you incur any additional charges.
If you choose to make your own air arrangements, the
cruise line assumes no responsibility. If you encounter
problems or miss the ship, it is your responsibility. If you
choose to make your own air arrangements, you may purchase
transfers from the cruise line in which case they will
transfer both you and your luggage to the ship.
How much luggage can I take?
You are allowed 2 checked bags per person and one carry-on
per person. Please make sure the luggage is readily
identifiable and marked with your name and address or phone
in case of baggage loss.
Trip Cancellation Insurance
Once you have made final payment on your cruise vacation,
the penalty clock starts ticking. If you have to cancel,
penalties will be applied. You can purchase insurance
through the various cruise lines or through other carriers
to protect your investment if you must cancel due to death
or illness. Ask your cruise consultant about your options.
How much should I
tip?
While tipping is a personal matter, you are expected to tip
three people on your cruise - the cabin steward, waiter and
assistant waiter. The industry guidelines are as follows:
$3.50 per person, per day for the waiter - the same amount
for the cabin steward and $2.50 per person, per day for the
assistant waiter. When you purchase an item from the bar,
the gratuity is included.
What shall I Wear?
Days onboard are casual, and you'll be most comfortable in
sports clothes and resort wear. Shoes should be low-heeled
for deck activities. Bring a few swimsuits so you'll always
have a dry one. For evening wear, count on three basic types
of attire.
* Casual ~ sundresses or slacks and blouses for women;
sport shorts and slacks for men.
* Smart Casual (informal) ~ dresses or pantsuits for
women; jackets for men.
* Formal ~ cocktail dresses for women (long or short);
dark suits and ties or tuxedos for men.
Ashore you'll need comfortable walking shoes, as well as a
hat and sunscreen for protection from the sun. Please
hand-carry all valuables, medication and travel documents.
What can I expect to be doing?
The cruise line will provide daily activity sheets in your
cabin to help you plan your day ahead.
The ship staff will present "port talks" before arriving at
your destinations - it is a good idea to go to these.
However, if you miss the presentation, most ships tape them
and run it on your in-cabin TV. If you have questions about
shore activities - feel free to talk with the shore
excursion desk to help you make a decision. FYI - if you are
traveling on Royal Caribbean International, shore excursion
information is now offered on-line at their web site - check
it out. The ship staff will also have a "disembarkation"
meeting. It is important that you go to this to have an
understanding of how the cruise line will get you off the
ship in an orderly fashion - and they do! At any point
during your cruise if you have questions or concerns, go to
the purser's desk - they are open 24 hours a day to assist
you.

What is a Day at Sea?
A Day at Sea is a full day spent
sailing between two ports. Most cruises include
one or more Days at Sea.
Here's an idea of what you can expect on any given
“day at sea”:
You awake in the morning with the
sun streaming in the window and the deep blue sea
stretching out before you, to the horizon. Will
you head to the promenade deck to meet the fitness
director for a brisk morning walk or jog around
the ship, or place a call to room service and
indulge yourself in a leisurely breakfast in bed?
You slip on your exercise clothes and you're off,
but half an hour later you realize those walks
through your neighborhood will never measure up to
the open-air laps you just took around your sleek
ocean liner.
Back in your stateroom, you shower
before heading to the formal dining room to enjoy
a full-service breakfast. It's white table cloths
and impeccably dressed staff, attentive to your
every whim, but your casual dress is the norm for
breakfast. By now, your waiter knows you by name
and has prepared your coffee just the way you like
it. The main dining room is rarely more than half
full for breakfast, as many passengers choose the
more casual, buffet-style restaurant. Will you try
the Eggs Benedict today, or have the chef whip up
an omelet? There's no need to check the price -
all your meals are included.
You glance at your copy of the
ship's daily program, which was slipped under your
stateroom door the previous evening. This is your
guide to the world of activities and events
offered onboard for that particular day - and
there is something for every style and age.
Perhaps you'll take part in the games and contests
happening outside by the pool, or join an aerobics
class or work out in the state-of-the-art gym.
Perhaps you'll attend a lecture about the culture
and history of the ports you'll be visiting, take
a cooking or computer class, or sign up for a
ballroom dancing lesson.
If the kids have come along,
they'll be plotting their very own schedule of
activities for the day - treasure hunts, T-shirt
decorating, and pizza parties at the Kid's Camp.
Later this afternoon, you could
play a game of bingo or take a gaming lesson in
the ship's casino. Perhaps you'll drop by the art
auction or visit the ship's boutiques and
duty-free shops. You and your shipmates can take
part in a fun (and funny!) passenger game show in
the ship's main show lounge. Try a Swedish massage
or a relaxing and revitalizing spa treatment. Or,
if you are in a more leisurely mood today, just
laze in the sun by the pool, or find a quiet spot
in the library and curl up with a good book. There
are cozy and private places to read on even the
largest ships.
Think that cruises have a lot to
offer during the day? When the sun goes down,
shipboard life is just heating up! Before dinner,
you may enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while
mingling with fellow guests. Single guests will
enjoy meeting others who are on their own at the
singles cocktail party or social. Then, enjoy a
world-class meal in the main dining room, where
the service and cuisine are exceptional. Of
course, the buffet restaurant is still an option
for dinner, and on many ships there are other
specialty restaurants from which to choose.
After dinner, head to the main show
lounge for a Broadway or Vegas-style show
performed by the ship's talented entertainment
staff. The kids won't be left out of the fun at
night; they may have their own dinner engagement
this evening with some of their newfound friends.
Later, while you are at the show, the older kids
will have a blast at the teen disco, while the
little ones watch movies and eat ice cream sundaes
at the kids-only slumber party!
After the show, you can try your
luck at the slots or gaming tables in the ship's
lively casino, or sit back and listen to a live
jazz band or chamber music in one of the ship's
lounges. Maybe you'll dazzle your fellow
passengers with your vocal talents during karaoke
or at a sing-along in the piano bar! Or just dance
the night away to the pulsing beat of the disco.
Whatever you do, don't forget the midnight buffet!
After a day custom-made to your
tastes, you'll wonder what you ever did for
excitement on dry land. |
